“United We Stand OUT” at Cleveland Pride 2017!

Cleveland Pride invites all to join us for the 28th annual festival on June 24th as “United We Stand OUT” at Voinovich Park! This theme reinforces the idea that we are not alone- we are part of a strong, resilient community that remains united through adversity. Not just on this day of Pride, but every day. “United We Stand” originated in 1768 in the patriotic ballad The Liberty Song by John Dickinson.

“Then join hand in hand, brave Americans all,
By uniting we stand, by dividing we fall;
In so righteous a cause let us hope to succeed,
For heaven approves of each generous deed”

The phrase maintained its patriotic and unifying origin carrying through from the Civil War to World War II to modern times. In paying homage to our past, we move forward knowing that in 2017, although there are forces that seek to divide us, we are still working to educate, spread love, and develop a world of peace and equality. With this as our main focus, Cleveland Pride is committed to creating a safe space to unify all people in celebration of our diversity. Our diversity in beliefs, genders, sexualities, races, religions, abilities, ethnicities, creeds, and more is the beauty that makes the LGBTQ community and our allies so strong. Divided we are limited, but together, we create the rainbow, a symbol of love and acceptance, that has limitless potential to change the world.

United We Stand OUT as a powerful force, ready to take on new challenges. Although the community has made some significant gains in recent years, there is still work to be done. Advancements towards racial justice, transgender rights, and general education about LGBTQ issues, just to name a few causes. We are proud of the people who came before us, who fought for us, but we must also stand out proud of those who continue to fight and find our own ways to stand up and stand out. Call local government officials, share your story, and advocate in your own community. No action is too small to make a difference.

This June, we remember our past and look forward to our future as we stand out against oppression, discrimination, homophobia, transphobia, and racism. We stand OUT everyday by showing that love conquers hate and that by remaining true to ourselves and joining with our neighbors, we have infinite strength. On June 24th, join us at Voinovich Park as “United We Stand OUT” in support of the past, present, and future of our LGBTQ community!
