Coyote Grace

Coyote Grace

Girl meets Girl. Girl becomes Boy. Girl and Boy become a band. Meet COYOTE GRACE.

If you want a lesson in organic chemistry, take notes and watch the sparks fly between the acoustic downhome duo known as COYOTE GRACE. This old-timey salt & pepper shaker pair is comprised of Joe Stevens, a transman singer/songwriter from Northern California, backed up by Ingrid Elizabeth on vocals and upright bass, a sassy femme originally hailing from the hills of Southeastern Ohio. The two met while living in Seattle, and have been performing as a duo since December 2004, sharing the stage with bluegrass, old-time, folk rock, jazz, and cabarets alike.

Joe Stevens, who has been writing songs since the age of fifteen, comes from a lineage of studio singers and choral conductors, as well as old time rock & rollers. He received a Bachelor of Music from Cornish College of the Arts in 2004 with a focus on composition, while also composing music for modern dance & avant-garde theater.

Also heavily influenced by choral performance, Ingrid was steeped in the world of musical theater, which armed her with a signature sound of brassy soul. Since relocating to the west coast, Ingrid has been involved with various musical ensembles, from bluegrass to psychedelic rock to choral groups, including eclectic acoustic stringband, Captain Gravel, and prairie bluegrass group, The Mike & Amy Finders Band.

Like a cool bottle of Gatorade during a hangover, Early Girl quenches your deepest of girl rock thirsts with their punchy, heartfelt lyrics and a stage show that makes you feel like you’re drunk at your best friend’s wedding reception and you can’t stop dancing. Despite not having yet released a full length album, this Cleveland-based quartet have captured the hearts and shaken the rumps of the indiefolk and queer alike all over the Heart-of-it-all state of Ohio. The royal lineage of the Early Girl family consists of 4 riot grrrl superheros: the siren-tongued songstress Angelisa Crognale, who plays the guitar more like a power tool than an instrument; all around badass Laura Ackerman, whose finger blasting bass lines resonate harder than the vibrations from a new Hitachi magic wand; musician magician Steph Burke who rips up the licks on electric guitar; and drummer Becky McMahon who has an army of seductive dance beats that have foot tapping effects reminiscent of the time you took too many caffeine pills before a midterm. Their combined powers create a hypnotic rainbow gaydar laser that lures hordes of lefties, artists, and queers out to the gay bars and indie dives to watch the magic happen. Sometimes you wanna go where everybody knows your name, and every body’s glad you’re gay. Let Early Girl supply the soundtrack to your Cheers fantasy- you supply the beer and that little dance you do at shows when you’re inspired by an infectious groove.

Melissa Ferrick could blow her own horn quite well _ a flugelhorn to be exact _ if she chose. Instead, she expresses her creative spirit with an acoustic guitar. Since the early 1990s, the accomplished singer-songwriter from New England has compiled a solid string of sonically strong, lyrically rich studio albums. Her widely praised 2006 album “In the Eyes of Strangers” fulfilled the rock ‘n’ roll essence that Ferrick has long harbored and drawn inspiration. But just when it seemed she would take a hard plunge into a more layered, instrumentally diverse sound, she returned to the studio to produce perhaps her most intimate, stripped-down album to date, her ninth studio effort “Goodbye Youth.” With the release of “Goodbye Youth,” Ferrick’s fan base and will certainly continue to expand, and fuel the enthusiasm for her music _ and further drive the passion she brings to her live shows.
