  • Kol HaLev and Cleveland Pride Co-Sponsor Screening of Documentary Film “Hineini”

    2009 - 04.23

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Kol HaLev and Cleveland Pride Co-Sponsor Screening of Documentary Film “Hineini” Kol HaLev and Cleveland Pride are proud to announce their co-sponsorship of the documentary film entitled “Hineini”, to be previewed on May 2 in Pepper Pike. The film, starring Shulamet Izen, is a documentary of her struggle to establish a gay-straight alliance in her Boston-area high school. The documentary shows, through a Jewish context, what its like to be an openly gay teen.

“I believe it is critically important for teens and adults to have the opportunity to learn about Shulamit’s amazing story,” said Rabbi Steve Segar of Kol HaLev, Cleveland’s Recontructionist Jewish Community.

“It helps us to understand—through a particularly Jewish lens—that religious life must address human sexuality, and that people of all sexual orientations have important religious and spiritual needs. The film shows how one courageous person can truly bring about important changes in the world,” Segar added.

Cleveland Pride has partnered with Kol HaLev as part of its interfaith-based outreach program in Northeast Ohio, and echoes Rabbi Segar’s sentiment about the importance of this film.

“We are honored to co-sponsor this film preview with Kol HaLev,” said Todd Saporito, Cleveland Pride Board President/CEO.

“As Rabbi Segar stated, this film helps viewers understand that spirituality must address human sexuality,” added Saporito. “We did not choose to be LGBT persons; we are born this way, and we are all God’s children. As such, by partnering with Kol HaLev, we can bring about valuable awareness community-wide, and help to stop discrimination and hateful treatment from others, especially among LGBT teens who have an alarmingly high suicide rate due to mistreatment and non-acceptance by peers and family.”

“Religion should not be a cloak used to alienate, reject or discriminate against LGBT individuals,” added Chris Cheuvront, Director of Marketing.

The event on May 2 includes a personal appearance by the film’s star, Shulamet Izen. This thought-provoking documentary is sure to be highly-educational and eye-opening.

This is a must-see for parents, teens and anyone else who has struggled with self-acceptance and community acceptance as a result of theirs or another’s sexuality.
